Every year in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April–May), the ancient city of Madurai transforms into a vibrant canvas of devotion, celebration, and tradition. The Chithirai Thiruvizha, as it’s known locally, is one of the grandest temple festivals in South India—and it draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists from every corner of Tamil Nadu.
The highlight of the festival is the celestial wedding (Thirukalyanam) of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar, a divine union that symbolizes harmony and prosperity. The streets fill with color and chants as processions of deities, traditional music, and decorated chariots create an electric spiritual atmosphere. Another major event is the Alagar’s entry into Vaigai River, where Lord Vishnu, as Alagar, arrives from Alagar Hills to attend his sister Meenakshi’s wedding—a moment that’s both emotional and festive.

Families, devotees, and curious travelers arrive in Madurai by the thousands, filling hotels, lining temple corridors, and joining in rituals that have been celebrated for centuries.
