IMMAYILUM NANMAI THARUVAR TEMPLE
This is one of the most unique Shiva temples in the world, located on West Masi Street.
Deities:
Moolavar: Lord Shiva as Immayilum Nanmai Tharuvar (One who grants goodness in this life itself, not just the afterlife).
Thayar: Madhyapuri Amman.
Posture: Unusually, Lord Shiva and Parvati are seated in a “Veerasana” posture behind the Shivalingam. This is very rare.
Sthala Varalaru (Legend):
After Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar got married, they worshipped Lord Shiva (in the form of a Lingam) themselves to seek blessings for their rule. Since the divine couple themselves prayed here, it is believed that worshipping here guarantees prosperity in the current life.
Legend 2: The stone elephant here is believed to have come alive to eat sugarcane from a stone-cutter, proving God is in everything.

It is one of the Pancha Bootha Sthalams within Madurai (representing Earth/Prithvi).

A temple that attracts thousands of devotees daily, located near Melur Road. It is famous for non-vegetarian offerings and spirit worship.
Deities:
Main Deity: Pandi Muneeswarar (A Guardian Deity/Kaval Deivam).
Form: He is worshipped in the form of a stone; there is no structured idol.
Sthala Varalaru (The Pandyan King Legend):
It is strongly believed that King Nedunjeliyan (the Pandya King who wrongly punished Kannagi’s husband Kovalan and died of shock saying “Yano Arasan, Yane Kalvan”) was reborn as Pandi Muneeswarar to guard the city and atone for his mistake.
Another legend says the temple was established by the Pandavas during their exile, but the King Nedunjeliyan story is the most popular local belief.
Unique Rituals:
Non-Veg Offering: Devotees offer Goats and Roosters (Kida Vettu) after their wishes are fulfilled.
Mani Kattu: People tie bells to the trees here praying for marriage and children.

Located on the banks of the Vaigai River (near Sholavandan), this temple is crucial to the history of Shaivism.
Deities:
Moolavar: Edaganathar (Lord Shiva).
Thayar: Elavarkuzhali / Visalakshi.
Theertham: Brahma Theertham.
Sthala Varalaru (The Palm Leaf Miracle):
In the 7th Century, there was a debate between Jains and Saivites (led by Thirugnana Sambandar). They agreed to test their truth by placing a palm leaf with their holy texts into the flowing Vaigai River.
The Jain palm leaf flowed with the current.
Sambandar’s palm leaf (containing the verse “Vazhga Andhanar”) swam against the river current and stopped at this spot (Thiruvedagam).
“Edu” means Palm Leaf, “Agam” means Place. Hence, Thiruvedagam.
Significance:
This is the place that reaffirmed Shaivism in the Pandya Kingdom. Students pray here for excellence in education (like the palm leaf that stood the test).
THIRUVATHAVUR THIRUMARAINATHAR TEMPLE
The birthplace of the great saint Manikkavasagar (Author of Thiruvasagam). Located 25 km from Madurai.
Deities:
Moolavar: Thirumarainathar (Shiva).
Thayar: Vedhanayaki.
Sthala Varalaru:
Manikkavasagar was born here. He was the Prime Minister to the Pandya King. Sent to buy horses, he met Lord Shiva (as a Guru) and spent the money building a temple (Avudaiyar Koil). The King punished him.
To save his devotee, Lord Shiva turned foxes (Nari) into horses (Pari) and brought them to Madurai. This famous “Nari Pari” Leela started with the saint from this village.
Architecture:
The temple walls have hundreds of ancient inscriptions.
There is a separate shrine for Manikkavasagar where he is worshipped as a primary deity.
TALLAKULAM PRASANNA VENKATACHALAPATHY TEMPLE
A very popular Vaishnavite temple in Madurai city.
Deities:
Moolavar: Prasanna Venkatachalapathy (Lord Vishnu).
Thayar: Padmavathi Thayar.
Sthala Varalaru:
This temple was built by King Thirumalai Nayak. He used to take his breakfast only after seeing the Gopuram of the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple from his palace. When towers blocked his view, he built this temple in Tallakulam (which was a tank/kulam back then) to view the Lord.
Chithirai Festival Connection:
This temple plays a critical role in the Chithirai Festival.
Lord Kallazhagar (coming from Alagar Koil) rests here for a night.
He changes his attire/guise here.
The famous “Andal Maalai” (Garland worn by Andal in Srivilliputhur) is brought here and offered to Kallazhagar before he enters the Vaigai River.
CELLATHAMMAN TEMPLE
Located near the North Bank of the Vaigai River (Simmakkal area).
Deities:
Moolavar: Cellathamman (A form of Kali/Durga).
Sthala Varalaru (Kannagi’s Wrath):
This temple is deeply connected to Silappathikaram. Legend says that after burning Madurai in anger, Kannagi cooled down at this spot.
Another story suggests that Kannagi worshipped this Goddess before entering the Pandya King’s court to demand justice.
Why it is powerful:
It is considered a “Neethi Sthalam” (Place of Justice). People with court cases and legal disputes worship here to get a favorable judgment. The distinct smell of Jasmine and Camphor here is mesmerizing.
MADHANA GOPALASWAMY TEMPLE
Located near the West Tower of Meenakshi Temple, often missed by tourists but an architectural gem.
Deities:
Moolavar: Madhana Gopalaswamy (Krishna playing the flute).
Thayar: Madhana Valli.
Significance:
t is one of the few temples where Krishna is seen with Rukmini and Satyabama on either side, playing the flute.
The stone pillars here have intricate carvings that rival the Meenakshi temple.
Music & Art: Musicians often perform here seeking the blessings of the divine flutist.
THIRUVAPUDAIYAR TEMPLE (THIRU AAPPUNOOR)
Located on the northern bank of Vaigai (Sellur area). It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam (Sung by Nayanmars).
Deities:
Moolavar: Aappudaiyar / Rishabeswarar.
Thayar: Kuravankazhali / Sugantha Kundalambikai.
Sthala Varalaru (Sand to Rice Miracle):
A Pandya King was a staunch devotee. Once, due to drought and war, he lost his wealth but insisted on feeding Shiva devotees. When he ran out of rice, he prayed to Lord Shiva. The Lord told him to take the river sand. When the King cooked the sand, it miraculously turned into high-quality rice.
Legend 2: The Shivalingam here was formed by a “Aappu” (Wedge) used in chariots; hence the name Aappudaiyar.
Specialty:
This is a temple for “Anna Dhanam” (Food Donation). Feeding the poor here is considered 100 times more meritorious than elsewhereADHI SOKKANATHAR TEMPLE
Located near Simmakkal. This is believed to be the Original (Adhi) temple before the current Meenakshi Temple was expanded.
Deities:Moolavar: Adhi Sokkanathar (Shiva).
Thayar: Adhi Meenakshi.
History:
Before the great fire or destruction mentioned in legends, this temple stood as the primary place of worship. The Shivalingam here is ancient and swayambhu (self-manifested).
Vibe: It is much quieter than the main temple, perfect for meditation.
Architecture: Though small, it carries the weight of thousands of years of history.
PECHI AMMAN TEMPLE
Located near the Vaigai River, close to the Aravind Eye Hospital area.
Deities:
Moolavar: Pechi Amman.
Sthala Varalaru:
Pechi Amman is a fierce guardian deity. She is the protector of children.
Fear of Night: Parents bring children who cry incessantly or wake up scared at night to this temple.
Safe Delivery: Pregnant women pray here for a safe delivery and offer black bangles and cradles.
Rituals:
The worship here is raw and folk-based. The Goddess is offered “Manjal Neer” (Turmeric water) and Neem leaves.
