HE DIVINE HEART – MEENAKSHI AMMAN TEMPLE
No trip to Madurai is complete without visiting the world-famous Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

  1. Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman Temple
    Significance: Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) and Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva). It is one of the oldest and largest temple complexes in India.
    The Gopurams (Towers): There are 14 gopurams. The South Tower is the tallest (170 ft). The intricate sculptures depict mythological stories.

    Potramarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Tank): The sacred tank where the Golden Lotus is believed to have bloomed.
    Ayiram Kaal Mandapam (1,000 Pillar Hall): Actually contains 985 beautifully carved pillars. It houses the Art Museum now.

  2. Pudhu Mandapam
    Located just opposite the East Tower.
    Originally a royal reception hall, it is now a bustling market for tailors and bookshops.

  3. Experience the grandeur of the kings who built modern Madurai.
  4. Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal
    History: Built in 1636 AD by King Thirumalai Nayak. It is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic style (fusion of Dravidian and Islamic architecture).
    Architecture: The massive circular pillars (82 feet high) and the central courtyard (Swarga Vilasam) are breathtaking. The intricate stucco work on the arches is famous.
    Light & Sound Show:
    A daily spectacle telling the story of the King and the epic Silappathikaram.
    Timings: 6:45 PM (English) & 8:15 PM (Tamil).
    Note: Only 1/4th of the original palace remains today; the rest was destroyed or dismantled over centuries.
  5. Ten Pillars (Pathu Thoon)
    Located in a narrow lane near the palace. These are the remains of the majestic Rangavilasa Mandapam.

  7. Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple (1st Arupadaiveedu)

    Unique Feature: In the main sanctum, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu face each other (Shaivism and Vaishnavism harmony).
    Saravana Poigai: The sacred temple tank located nearby.

  8. Pazhamudircholai (6th Arupadaiveedu)
    Location: Situated atop the Solaimalai hill (part of Alagar Koil hills).
    Significance: It is believed to be the place where Avvaiyar (the Tamil poet) was tested by Murugan near a Jamun tree (Naval Maram).

A temple nestled in the hills with rich traditions.

  1. Kallazhagar Temple (Alagar Koil)
    Deity: Lord Vishnu (Sundararajan). He is considered the brother of Goddess Meenakshi.
    Chithirai Festival: The event of Kallazhagar entering the Vaigai River is the biggest festival in Madurai, attracting millions.
    Architecture: The massive fortification walls and the intricate wood carvings in the main tower are stunning.
    Noopura Gangai: A perennial natural spring at the top of the hill (Rakkayi Amman Temple). The water is believed to have medicinal properties.
