Legend holds that when the great flood (Pralaya) threatened to engulf Madurai, Goddess Meenakshi requested Lord Shiva to define its boundaries. Shiva outlined the city with his celestial serpent, Adisesha. When the serpent’s head and tail met, a potent venom was emitted. To save Madurai, Meenakshi consumed the poison, transforming into the fierce and powerful form of Bhadrakali (Pathrakali).
Overwhelmed by her divine fury, the local deity, Ayyanar, offered her shelter. This is why the shrine is also famous for the monumental statue of the accompanying deity, Adaikalam Kaatha Ayyanar (Ayyanar who offered shelter), who stands tall with his magnificent horse, providing shade and protection to the Goddess.
